Our house is your house!Insight’s new home is ready to host your shows, classes or rehearsals! Nearly flattened by developers’ bulldozers just four years ago, the Lyric Hyperion Theater recently flung open the doors of our long-awaited lobby-café at 2106 Hyperion Avenue. Billed as “Silver Lake’s hip new spot for arts and eats,” the totally renovated venue is the right idea at the right time for its upscale, creative neighborhood. The cozy playhouse boasts a beautiful café in the lobby and front patio, which provides a much more welcoming and polished audience experience than most other small L.A. theaters. Inspired by coffeehouse-theaters we’ve visited on six European tours, Insight America set out to create a comfortable hub for local writers, actors, and musicians to share good work, good conversation and good food. The rejuvenated space offers plays, sketch and acting classes, and occasional live music, as well as tasty food and drink days and evenings, independent of show schedules. With adjacent lot parking, and within walking distance for many Sunset Junction, Los Feliz, Franklin Hills and Silver Lake residents, the new Theater Café seeks to support a sense of community. During the extensive remodeling over the past couple years, we added double glass doors, large windows and twice the interior space to liberate the old cramped, dark lobby and house the stylish new coffee bar. We covered the cracked cement driveway with a landscaped hardwood deck. High-tech soundproofing entirely eliminated traffic noise that plagued performances. We tore down the rickety old control booth to build a comfortable, efficient one with all new equipment. The newly flexible “black box” auditorium seats up to 70 (formerly, there were 32 fixed seats), with a playing area – depending on the seating plan you choose – up to 33 feet wide and up to 20 feet deep. (The old stage was 15 by 20.) The roomy backstage area offers one to three dressing rooms as needed depending on cast size.
